Zenji (ゼンジ, Zenji) is a capo within the Mafia Community.
Appearance[]
Zenji is a stocky, bald man with a mustache and soul patch. He wears a black suit with a red shirt and yellow tie. He also wears a small pair of sunglasses.
Personality[]
Zenji is a pretentious individual who despises Light Nostrade for his quick rise through the ranks of the Mafia and the unconventional way he did so, which Light interprets as jealousy. He becomes irritated very easily and did not hesitate to punch Light in front of multiple witnesses, even encouraging Kurapika to stab him while he was being held at knifepoint.[1] He is also extremely vindictive, which he showed by trying to outbid Kurapika at the Underground Auction and later attempting to kill him before Kurapika's bloodlust left him terrified.[2]
Plot[]
Yorknew City arc[]
On September 3rd at an undisclosed hotel, Zenji waits with the six freelance assassins as Silva and Zeno Zoldyck enter the room. Zenji says that it seems everyone is present as he counts them, but one of his men says that the Nostrade Family is sending one more. As Zenji criticizes Light, one of his men reminds him that Zenji's boss depends on his daughter's fortunes. Zenji replies that Light isn't his boss and says that it's his own business if he wants to be upset.[1]
They hear the door opening, and Kurapika and Light join the meeting. Zenji explains that their mission is to eliminate the Phantom Troupe, explaining that they may return to the auction that night. He leaves the method up to him and tells them to ask if they need anything. Assassin D requests a floor plan of the building and Assassin E requests a map. After the assassins talk amongst themselves and agree to work alone, the meeting ends and Zenji meets up with Light, asking him how things are going. He appears jealous of Light and reminds him how quickly he rose up the Mafia's ranks. He then asks Light how his hands are and says that he had heard he was rubbing them so much that his fingerprints are gone.[1]
As Zenji and his men laugh, Light comments on how pathetic jealousy is, causing Zenji to punch Light repeatedly in the face. Kurapika appears beside him holding a knife at his throat. Zenji asks if he wants a fight and tells Kurapika to stab him if he has the guts. Light orders Kurapika to stop, and Zenji's men pull their boss away as the three leave. Thinking nothing of the encounter, Light claims that he's made enemies like Zenji due to his quick rise to power with Neon's accurate precognition and their incompetence.[1]
Overhearing two Mafia members telling Kurapika that the Phantom Troupe's leader is lead, Zenji approaches him and says that the Zoldycks took care of the job while he was wasting time with an ambulance. He tells Kurapika that he's useless and that he should go fawn over his fortune-teller at the hospital or hotel. As Zenji asks if he wants to hold his master's hand, Kurapika suddenly punches him directly in the face as he leaves to confirm that the Troupe members are dead.[3]
After seeing the dead Troupe members for himself, Kurapika attends the Underground Auction and bids 500 million for the Scarlet Eyes. However, Zenji suddenly arrives and bids 1 billion. Kurapika eventually contacts Light and tells him that he had to raise the price to 2.9 billion after getting into a bidding war with Zenji. After Kurapika picks up the packaged Scarlet Eyes, Zenji confronts him on his way back to Neon's hospital. Holding a gun in his hand, he points it at Kurapika and threatens to kill him if he doesn't stop. Kurapika tells Zenji to step aside and causes him enter a state of panic when he senses Kurapika's bloodlust. Zenji asks himself how someone like Kurapika is making his blood run cold, and as Kurapika walks past him, he is left frozen with fear, breathing heavily and wondering who he is. [2]
